Assistant Attorney General

Illinois Attorney General's Office

As an Assistant Attorney General in the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, Dan began prosecuting child sex crimes. He was then transferred to the Trial Assistance and Sexually Violent Persons Bureau (SVP Bureau), where he led jury trials in many serious criminal offenses.

At the IL AG office, Dan led jury trials in many criminal offenses including First Degree Murder, Reckless Homicide, Child Sex Cases, Drug Possession, Official Misconduct, and Aggravated DUI.

His SVP Bureau work also involved seeking civil commitment of those sex offenders who were about to be released from prison — a highly specialized area of law requiring deep legal expertise and courtroom composure.

While Attorney Kay served in the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, he was part of a select group of criminal attorneys certified by the Illinois Supreme Court to work death penalty cases as the lead attorney.
